Title
Tie and Dye
Description
Domestic hand-built, low-fired terracotta pottery from West Africa is the inspiration for this sculptural vessel. Drawing on craft and historical narratives, and an interest in diasporic stories of objects, skills and people, the body is disrupted and activated as a means of storytelling and embodied practice. Vessels hold trace and memory. Built up from a series of terracotta clay coils, the work is made expressively and gesturally, with a narrative surface referencing 'Adire', the blue and white tie and dye textiles of Nigeria. The result is a unique piece, commanding its own space - between pot and figure, craft and art, monument, and decoration.
