Part of a new series of paintings, investigating my love of landscape and inspired by the Wild Atlantic Way. Buried within and among the painting layers are references to places, each beautiful in its specific location on the shipping route. This particular work takes as it main inspiration, the poem 'Shipping Forecast' by Seamus Heaney. The poetry of Heaney informs many of my paintings, however this one in particular is directly inspired by his poem. I almost felt like this poetic text could be painted or blended into the painting, wrapping around wave-like forms or scattered across different areas, creating a sense of rhythm similar to the radio forecasts themselves. The locations like Malin Head, Fastnet, German Bight, and Lundy can almost be read within the paint itself and I wanted the tone to evoke both a sense of the vastness of the sea and the quiet intimacy of listening to the forecast.
